Functionally they don’t seem effective at all. When I recast something from a small account, it feels less of a signal boost than a like (esp with the recent change of showing likes from mutuals on the feed). When I quote cast something from a small account, I know it goes out to my followers because of the engagement, which I (wrongfully feel I) absorb from them which is the opposite of what I’m trying to do— increase their exposure. Maybe it’s the lack of notifications generated from recasts that makes it all feel this way. But I have noticed the most engaged casts have disproportionately more likes than recasts. If not, it’s some growth hack the cast author is doing to get users to like and recast for something in exchange (a frame, something on an app, etc). Reblogging on tumblr was what made it such a cozy corner in its heyday; small accounts with great content had distribution because of how the viral components played out.
