Went to see The Odyssey yesterday.
Popular opinion: it was incredibly well made. The music felt magical. I loved that the composer leaned on ancient instruments and stayed true to the period. I may or may not have burst into tears watching Troy fall. Also couldn’t stop feeling angry about Troy turning into excavation layer VIIa
Unpopular opinion: my favorite adaptation is still The Return with Ralph Fiennes as Odysseus & Juliette Binoche as Penelope. It’s a slow-burn, deeply human adaptation of the books 13-24 (nostos - the homecoming) Beautifully quiet, subtle and restrained, never flashy. Highly recommend if you are into that kind of thing.
Mom’s bragging rights: Seeing @dearadri know the Odyssey so well made me so incredibly proud! For the first time I was the one asking the questions. She kept pointing out where they strayed from Homer’s original epic, catching all the mischaracterizations and plot holes. 🥲
+ So happy to see everyone being excited about a film rooted in an ancient classic!
