All this Odyssey hype is the perfect excuse to talk about one of my favorite concepts in psychology: the Cassandra phenomenon Cassandra was a beautiful Trojan princess. Apollo gifted her the power of foresight in hopes of winning her love. After defying the authority of the gods by rejecting Apollo, she was cursed so that no one would ever believe her. So, when she tried to warn the Trojans about the horse, nobody listened... Obviously, we don’t believe in curses anymore, but the Cassandra effect still appears when group think, bias and incentives make warnings impossible to hear. I’ve personally been on both sides of this story, but looking at the discourse today, I can’t help but think of a certain we all know. Funny how that works.
