Cryptography has roots in ancient Egypt. The practice of cryptography dates back thousands of years, with one of the earliest examples found in ancient Egypt. The Egyptians used a form of cryptography known as “hieroglyphic substitution” around 1900 BCE. They would replace the standard hieroglyphs in inscriptions with others to encode messages, primarily for religious or ceremonial purposes. This form of substitution is one of the earliest recorded instances of cryptography being used to protect information.
