The First Known Ransomware Attack Happened in 1989.
The first documented case of ransomware occurred in 1989, long before cryptocurrencies became a part of the picture. Known as the “AIDS Trojan” or “PC Cyborg Virus,” it was distributed via floppy disks sent through the mail. The malware encrypted files on the user’s computer, and to regain access, the victim was instructed to send $189 to a P.O. Box in Panama. This early form of ransomware set the stage for the more sophisticated and widespread attacks that would come decades later.
