If you walked into Berlin’s Market today expecting the usual scent of cinnamon, roasted almonds and hot mulled wine, you got something else instead: a sea of Syrian flags, Palestinian banners, and a crowd that stretched from the subway exit all the way to the foot of the giant illuminated Christmas pyramid.
