Probably the most random combination of footballers you’ll ever see in one photo. A World Cup champion and former Juventus/Manchester United player — Paul Pogba — alongside the youngest manager in Premier League history, Brighton boss Fabian Hürzeler. They’re battling it out in a France vs. Germany U-team match, with Hürzeler even wearing the No. 10 shirt. Of course, that wasn’t enough information for me, so I dug up the match report. Here’s what stood out: • The game was played in April 2009 between the U-16 teams. Pogba and Hürzeler both started. • The French squad included two familiar names: Alphonse Areola (West Ham) and Lucas Digne (Aston Villa). For Germany, there was Nico Schulz, who until recently played for Dortmund. • Germany won 2–0, and guess who scored? Yep — Hürzeler! Fabian was the top scorer for Germany U-16 in the 2008/09 cycle, scoring five goals despite playing in central midfield.
