This work reimagines a historic kabuki portrait by Tōshūsai Sharaku—an elusive, highly distinctive ukiyo-e artist from Japan’s Edo period—through four dramatically different manga-inspired aesthetics. While preserving the original pose, attire, and intense emotional tension, the piece explores how visual interpretation shifts across contrasting genres: the harsh, gritty realism of Hokuto no Ken-style, the dark psychological intensity of Berserk-style, the supernatural action ambience of Yu Yu Hakusho-style, and the militaristic survival drama tone of Attack on Titan-style.
Through this juxtaposition, the artwork highlights how identity, expression, and cultural storytelling transform when filtered through divergent artistic worldviews—yet remain anchored by a single, timeless human presence.
