A photo of Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) A French artist and one of the greatest and most influential sculptors in history, he was the one who, almost as soon as European art realized that stone could be carved as if it were breathing, could be made to look like it was breathing. Auguste Rodin is best known for his sculptures that depict human emotion in a raw and natural way. In contrast to the formal and dry sculpture of his time, he created living, tense, and very realistic forms, and this new approach has led him to be called the "father of modern sculpture." Almost everyone knows his three famous works: the sculpture "The Thinker," a man in deep thought that has become a symbol of thinking; the sculpture "The Gates of Hell," a massive, complex, and thought-provoking project; and the sculpture "The Kiss," which depicts two lovers as if they have the feeling and warmth of real people.
