Buying a new MacBook this week. Def doing M4. Was thinking 32 gb ram, 512 ssd should be more than enough Does anyone have strong opinions on the air vs pro? My current one is a pro I bought 6 years ago. Seems like there’s a “lightweight / aesthetic” argument to the air which might be worth thinking about

get a thinkpad x1 carbon (maybe even gen 11 or lower) for $450 or so and launch pop os there! it's time to try! https://blog.borodutch.com/i-switched-to-linux-as-my-main-machine/ source: used to drop $5500 annually for the new macbook, no longer do so

Just bought the MacBook Pro with a m4 pro chip, 1 tb ssd, 32 gb ram, nano texture display (which is awesome for using it outdoors) I think the biggest consideration is what kind of AI model you want to be able to run in the future, locally, if that interests you, or if you’re using it for editing video/intense gaming. If no to all, then an air is probably fine. If you want more power for running ai, might be with the pro chip

FWIW don't even travel that much anymore, but I hate lugging around my 16" pro (M3 Pro) even though I love having it at home haven't tried air in a while, but I also hate it when shit hangs sorry if that was unhelpful, please let me know if the air is any good if you go air

Air sucks, transitioning to a pro for me was eye opening.

Please get larger disk - 1tb is minimum frankly. Love the pro. If you want to run local llm’s more ram will help. I feel like @yb had a similar post recently

Imo there isn’t a need for a pro model anymore if you’re kind of normal user, check some tests- The M4 Air can render VR without lagging.

I had the m4 pro 16gb ram which did me wonders until the screen broke after 4 months. The laptops incredible, just be careful with how you handle it. If you can, perhaps consider applecare also

It depends on your setup. I have two laptops, a 16" and a 13" (both with M chips), but I prefer to work on an iMac mini (32 GB) with a big monitor, rarely use laptops. More is better. Also, 512 SSD is not so big, but it depends on you.

would recommend at least 1TB SSD always got pros as I don’t have a need to have a lighter one

with apple, youll pay in annoyances later if you dont get enough storage. it makes sense to max out if you know you dont want to upgrade again later. yes its expensive, yes its annoying. im sorry. https://farcaster.xyz/tipsysquid/0x766c1792
