The bottom of Lake Akan in Hokkaido, Japan, is inhabited by magical spherical algae called "marimo". In 1921 they were recognized as a "Treasure of Japanese Nature". Many Japanese people keep marimo in their homes and offices as pets. They are soft, velvety and very unpretentious.
