Day 3 – Madness and the Fall With the Zulu on top, all tribes were either crushed or absorbed. But the violence didn’t stop. Fleeing tribes carried Zulu brutality into new lands, sparking chaos that caused over 2 million deaths in just 15 years. Perhaps Shaka’s violence could have been turned against colonizers but then tragedy struck. His mother died. Shaka’s grief turned into madness. He ordered no crops to be planted, no milk to be drunk, and cows slaughtered so calves would feel the pain of loss. Pregnant women were executed with their husbands. 7,000 people were killed simply for not grieving enough. The people had suffered enough. In 1828, one of his brothers stabbed Shaka Zulu to death ending the reign of one of Africa’s most ruthless conquerors.
