Masayoshi Son said he literally cried when he sold SoftBank’s entire Nvidia stake. Not because of the profit he’s thrilled about that but because he had to let go of an asset he deeply believed in just to fund even bigger AI ambitions.
SoftBank is now all-in on AI: massive bets on OpenAI, plans for global AI data centers, acquisitions across the chip stack. Son’s essentially selling a “gold-mining machine” to build the mine itself and back the best miner he can find.
He thinks AI will create at least 10% of global GDP and isn’t worried about any bubble talk. For SoftBank, the Nvidia sale isn’t an exit it’s the opening move in a much bigger gamble.
