This is the main driver of almost all political changes in the 21st century. In particular it explains Trump isolationism: from 1945 to 1974 it was natural that the US would police the world, as they had an obvious stake in order. From 1974 to 2000 it declined in favor of unalloyed US allies Japan and Germany. Elated by its victory in the cold war, the US kept running the show anyway -> a frank conversation should have happened at this point. The US isn t the only culprit here. In 2000s it collapsed in favor of a US enemy. -> Why would the US help?
