The Electric Sense of Sharks
Sharks have one of the most extraordinary senses in the animal world.
They can detect tiny electric signals produced by the muscles and heartbeat of other animals.
This ability comes from special organs on their snout called the ampullae of Lorenzini.
These organs are so sensitive that a shark can sense an electrical current as small as a billionth of a volt.
That means even if a fish is completely hidden under sand, the shark can still โfeelโ its presence through electricity alone.
A level of biological precision that no human-made technology has fully matched yet.
