Some Birds Can Sleep While Flying
Certain birds, like frigatebirds, can stay in the air for weeks without landing.
What makes this possible is their ability to sleep while flying.
They use a form of unihemispheric sleep, where one half of the brain sleeps while the other half stays awake to control flight and navigation. These sleep episodes last only a few seconds at a time, but together they add up to enough rest to survive long journeys.
For these birds, rest doesnβt mean stopping.
It means adapting sleep to the sky.
