Some Turtles Can Breathe Through Their Butts
Certain species of turtles can absorb oxygen through special tissues near their tail.
This process is called cloacal respiration and allows them to stay underwater for long periods during winter without surfacing for air.
By slowing their metabolism and using this alternate form of breathing, these turtles can survive under ice-covered water for months.
A strange solution
to a very cold problem.
