I finally finished the painting I’d been arguing with for about two years. It’s a tribute to the books that made me who I am. I’ll tell that part of the story when I show the whole painting properly, in colour. For now, I want to tell you how long it took me to finish it. When the idea first came to me, I made the sketch and the first underpainting. I was so pleased with it that evening. The next morning, I looked at it again and immediately felt that something wasn’t right, although I couldn’t explain what. I continued working on it, but slowly and without much enthusiasm. Eventually, I put it aside for a few months. When I returned to it, I changed some shapes and details. Individual parts began to work, but the painting as a whole still didn’t. 1/2 ⬇️
