86 carats of history in a single stone. This is the Spoonmaker’s Diamond, one of the most famous treasures of the Ottoman era. I photographed it during my trip to Turkey. The pear-shaped diamond is set in gold and surrounded by 49 smaller diamonds arranged in two rows, from largest to smallest. It was most likely acquired by the Palace Treasury during the reign of Sultan Mehmed IV in the second half of the 17th century. A photograph can’t quite capture its scale, but in person, it’s almost impossible to look away 🤩
