Assess competitive moats by examining defensible technical, network, and business advantages. Technical moats include proprietary protocols, patents, or performance characteristics that are hard to replicate. Network effects matter: adoption that increases value for each additional user (liquidity pools, developer adoption, or marketplace density) creates stickiness. Look for ecosystem lock-in—integrations, SDKs, and developer tooling that make migration costly. Business moats are strategic partnerships, regulatory approval, or exclusive data access. Also evaluate cost advantages and speed to market relative to rivals. A holistic moat assessment combines on-chain metrics (user retention, active developers), off-chain partnerships, and the ease with which competitors could clone core features.
