Many public chains bootstrap adoption by subsidizing developers, users, or validators with native tokens. While effective in seeding ecosystems, this model is rarely sustainable once incentives taper. Long-term success requires transitioning from subsidy-driven growth to organic demand. Chains relying excessively on subsidies risk hollow ecosystems with mercenary participants. Sustainability arises when subsidies catalyze initial momentum but give way to real utility, network effects, and economic activity independent of token emissions.
