I moved into a slumlord apartment once during school. Same situation. 

Problem is that the landlord didn’t vet the previous tenants, so the previous tenants trashed the place, and it was impossible to squeeze the cleaning fee out of them. 

Anyways. If you want to get rid of flies, windex. They’ll drop dead. And the sprayer is very wide so it’ll be easier to catch them. Good luck!
