Berkhamsted Castle in Hertfordshire was a crucial motte-and-bailey castle Hertfordshire, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧 The castle was built in the late 11th Century CE, built shortly after the Norman Conquest of 1066 AD. It was the site where the English surrendered to William the Conqueror. It later served as a royal residence and military base, notably owned by Thomas Becket and extensively rebuilt in stone during 13th Century AD. Its significance declined after the 15th Century AD, leaving the impressive ruins seen today.
