My suggestion for us to use Teflon tape was a good idea for the water heater project as we ended up needing 3 layers on the hot water fitting. The cold one only took 1 layer of Teflon tape. We first sealed it with pipe sealant which us old school people call "pipe dope". That's what they called it in the old days -S23U
