It’s hilarious that New Yorkers elected Mamdani. Obama’s opponents imagined a radical, foreign-born Muslim boogeyman—so now here comes, actually born in Africa, actually Muslim, actually leftist… and he’s crushing NYC politics with exactly the sort of unapologetic progressive vision they feared Obama might secretly harbor. It’s like the birther fantasy accidentally willed itself into being—but 15 years later, and way more ideologically potent. Progressives win when they stop running from the insult and start owning the slur flipping it—whether it’s “queer,” “dyke” or “whatever,” or in this case “Muslim born in Africa”—the moral panic collapses under its own weight.

Obama won twice, easily, and by a lot, so theres no marked difference in results.

Zohran didn’t win by embracing being a Muslim from Africa he won by appealing to relatively affluent people 25-34 who like the idea of a cool DSA guy being mayor

If you ever doubt American cultural hegemony, just remember: the entire English-speaking internet is currently live-commenting a New York City mayoral primary like it’s the moon landing.

They are both explicitly stating they want to make society better but are doing it in a way that we have obvious evidence makes everybody worse off and leads to unnecessary suffering and death

Will Zohran as mayor lead to this? If he can do the things that he says he wants to, then yes, although on a pretty small scale.

Beyond the fact of prices being universally good like anything else - the idea that there are not Nazi candidates is not controversial because this is a group that unequivocally makes society worse.

Why would it not be treated equally that a group advocating for elimination of prices is treated the same way?

Prices are literally a universal good.

They do more good than public education, public water, maybe more than healthcare and vaccinations.

There is no argument for controlling prices that does not make people’s lives worse. This is not my subjective opinion, we have the historical record on this

If you assume that Zohran’s price control proposals will be implemented in full, the obvious highest impact EA cause Dustin Moskovitz or any other EA guy could do would be making sure that Zohran does not become mayor of NYC

Actually if you’re committed to really being EA, beyond eliminating diseases like smallpox, the next best empirically proven thing you can do would be not having any socialist or communist candidates for office.

There is no good faith debate about whether this is good or bad. The only fight is purely political whether you can pull it off or not. 

All proponents are always bad faith in order to signal something to others (least bad) or take something from others (most bad)
