Today I was at a kindergarten holiday event with my daughter. Everything went as usual: poems, Santa Claus, gifts. Then the parents rushed in — photos, hugs, noise and bustle.
And in the middle of all that — one little boy. Dressed up nicely, holding his gift, standing off to the side and constantly looking toward the exit. His eyes were sad, but he wasn’t crying or complaining — just standing there, quietly staring at the door. Walking back and forth. Waiting. His parents, apparently, didn’t come.
The celebration ended, but he was still hoping.
Later they took him back to the group. I asked the teachers to pay attention to him and sent my daughter to play with him — he cheered up a bit, but his eyes kept drifting back to the door.
So here’s what I wanted to say.
Go to your children’s kindergarten celebrations more often.
They are waiting for you there.
