Today my therapist told me there’s a generation of women who are afraid of having boundaries for fear of “gaslighting”. But gaslighting is usually super deliberate and evil. Like hiding someone’s things, cutting off the bottom of their pants, etc to convince the other person they’re crazy. So have boundaries, don’t be afraid of gaslighting.

I don’t think gaslighting is always deliberate or blatantly evil. In fact, I think most gaslighting is subtle. Which is how it manages to slowly accumulate and cloud your judgement and perception. Until you eventually believe that the things being done to you are your own fault. In that type of dynamic, boundaries get used as ammo. For example, if you try to say no to something, that can be turned into an accusation that you’re being selfish. So I wonder if that’s what your therapist was referring to: boundaries being used manipulatively by the gaslighting person. As opposed to boundaries being misinterpreted as gaslighting.

a lot of people now hear these words and immediately go to 'weaponizing therapy-speak' sad b/c i think most people who use them aren't doing that

That’s really unfortunate. But I feel like people who are setting boundaries, and being told they are gaslighting… are being gaslit.
