- In the absence of an official speech, Trump speaks of "liberating the Venezuelan people," combating drug trafficking, and bringing democracy, but at the same time announces that the U.S. will "manage" Venezuela until a transition and that American companies will take control and sell Venezuelan oil to the rest of the world. This combination of political occupation and economic appropriation reveals the neocolonial nature of the operation, making the humanitarian argument a rhetorical cover for energy and geopolitical interests. It has nothing to do with freeing Venezuela from a dictatorship.
