If you like slow-burn, atmospheric films, La Chimera might be your kind of movie. It's an Italian drama with touches of magical realism, but it's really about grief, longing, and letting go of the past.
The main character, Arthur, has been released from prison after looting ancient Etruscan tombs. He has an almost supernatural ability to sense where these burial sites are hidden. He becomes involved with tomb raiders operating on the black market, but he is not driven by treasure. What he really searches for is a way back to the woman he lost.
The title, La Chimera, refers both to a mythical creature and an impossible dream or obsession someone spends their life pursuing. For Arthur, that chimera is the hope of reunion and the desire to cross the boundary between the living and dead.
The ending is deliberately esoteric, leaving much open to interpretation.
I also really enjoyed it on a personal level since I’ve been lucky enough to take part in real archaeological excavations three times myself.
