I came across today's word of the day a few days ago in The Language Puzzle by Steven Mithen. Fun fact: aphasia ("the loss of all or some aspects of speech") helped scientists see that language in the brain is a lot more complex than they used to think. Broca found that damage to one small area in the left frontal lobe could affect speech, and Wernicke later showed that understanding language involves other brain areas too. Today we know it’s not just one or two centers, but a much larger network.
