Japan's Sankei Shimbun newspaper reported that the number of foreign mercenaries deserting in Ukraine is increasing.
The # Russia-Ukraine war will mark its third anniversary next month. The Ukrainian army continued to resist with the goal of retaking the entire territory, but faced exhaustion and confusion. Taiwanese soldiers who participated in the foreign mercenary force, the International Territorial Defense Corps (ILDU), confirmed the actual situation to Sankei Shimbun.
According to ILDU, foreigners contracted with the Ukrainian army since May last year are legally required to serve for at least six months. The Taiwanese soldier was told by the military that "if he refuses his assignment and leaves the army within six months, he will be forcibly sent to the military police." However, a review of Ukrainian lawyers and contracts found that the six-month military service was merely a moral obligation and not legally enforceable.
