The amount of money the federal government has pumped into the economy is massive. It's normal for the economy to remain strong, driven by continued fiscal stimulus from the inflation reduction bill, the CHIPS bill, and a surge in deficit spending. We have previously pointed out that deficit spending has indeed helped the economy avoid a recession. “It is noteworthy that despite the Fed’s aggressive rate hikes, the economy has avoided a recession, which is puzzling. From leading economic indicators to the yield curve, many indicators show that the probability of a recession is high, but a recession has never occurred. One explanation is the surge in federal spending from the inflation reduction bill and the CHIP bill since the end of 2022. Another reason is that the previous $5 trillion fiscal policy has kept GDP high, and its lagged effects will take longer to digest than historical norms.”
