Former Barcelona midfielder Rafinha Alcântara has announced his retirement from football at the age of 32. Plagued by injuries throughout his career, Rafinha has finally been forced to give in to the physical setbacks that repeatedly held him back. The son of Mazinho, a member of Brazil’s 1994 World Cup–winning squad, Rafinha’s career never reached its full potential due to countless injuries. Unlike his brother Thiago Alcântara, who shone at Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Liverpool, Rafinha was unable to truly establish himself at the very top level. Rafinha made his Barcelona debut in November 2011, but over nine years with the Catalan club, he managed to play only 90 matches. After leaving Barcelona permanently, he joined Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in 2020.
