Surrounded by vibrant locals on a dilapidated bus in rural Vietnam, I came to understand the actual worth of low-cost travel: genuine experiences. I traveled around Southeast Asia after graduating from college, carrying only a backpack. Staying in hostels built camaraderie, and taking buses and trains saved money while affording spectacular vistas.
