I was ‘today’ years old when I realized that intrinsic risk factors aren’t “acquired” — they’re natural. They’re built into you.
I used to think intrinsic meant something you picked up along the way. Like, having a family history of cancer felt “acquired” because it’s not your fault — you just inherited it. But the intrinsic factor isn’t the relative with cancer. It’s the gene defect you were born with that makes the cancer more likely.
At the end of the day, intrinsic means it’s part of your baseline. Just like age. You don’t acquire age, you live it. It’s natural, internal, unavoidable — it’s you.
So yeah, intrinsic risk factors are the cards you were dealt, not the ones you picked up.
