I know the majority of people today aren't rich or capable enough to access state-of-the-art healthcare.
But one thing I will always judge patients for is using local methods like traditional bone setters, traditional doctors, and traditional birth attendants with little or no medical knowledge to try to mitigate medical emergencies before rushing to the hospital.
The most recent case was a baby with seizures. For over 2 months they used herbal concoctions to try and mitigate it. When the baby finally lost consciousness, they brought the child to us for expert care. That baby died — and somehow we doctors got the blame.
It’s infuriating. How do we handle these cases when the quacks who claim to give first aid don’t mitigate anything — they just worsen the situation?
