One thing that keeps showing up in med school are the vitriolic remarks and behavior from toxic consultants. You start to wonder how they’re made. At this point, I don’t think they’re created — I think they’re built, like revenge stories waiting to be passed down.
During one of my end-of-posting clinical exams, I examined the patient. Exam tension, nerves, and I missed one small step. When the consultant asked, I said yes. That’s all it took. He burst out laughing and said, “You don’t know it,” with that loud, cutting laugh. Even the patient and his relatives, who had no clue what was happening, joined in.
I felt awful. You can correct someone without hate. Criticize the work, don’t weaponize it.
I’m certain it was me in that moment, because anyone else could walk away with a revenge mantra. And who knows what the next set of junior doctors would hear from them because of it.
