I used to brag to the whole school about how well I could read in my hostel. After all, it’s my comfort zone: soft bed, decent Wi-Fi, lights on 24/7, a relaxing chair, and a fan that actually works. I’d convince myself I could block everything out if I just put my mind to it.
But no matter how much I “locked in,” the cacophony of the hostel would win. It didn’t matter what noise-cancelling headset I wore. The discordant mix of people shouting, vehicles passing, machines humming, animals crying, and games blaring from speakers would still throw me off balance.
Because of that noise, I had to train myself to read outside the hostel. Even if the new spot was uncomfortable, it was quieter than the chaos I left behind.
