The funniest battle in healthcare, in my opinion, is between doctors and lab scientists. Both think their conjecture is the final answer, while ignoring that both conjectures together are what actually get you to the truth.
The doctor builds a conjecture — the working diagnosis — from history and exam findings. The lab scientist builds their own conjecture from the tests they run. I’m not saying either conjecture is wrong on its own. I just think the doctor’s conjecture sets the direction, and the scientist’s conjecture confirms it.
Put those two conjectures together and you get the best treatment plan. More importantly, you get a conclusion based on all the data, with nothing left out.
