In my entire stay on God’s green earth, the number one thing I’ve learned in med school is having a perceptive mind. Take the day we were supposed to do surgery. After administering antibiotics to this beautiful child, no one noticed the reaction — the drop in SpO2, blood pressure, pulse rate, all blinking on the monitor. No alarm sounded because someone had skipped it. But the doctor noticed the once active child turning quiet and restless, and that’s how everyone else knew. If after all these years he hadn’t been perceptive, a machine’s silence could have cost a life. It might seem small, but what that doctor did was the wake-up call I needed to widen my vision. And it took such low effort — just being perceptive.
