“Stabat Mater” — Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710–1736)
This is a piece that comes from pain — and still manages to be breathtakingly beautiful. Pergolesi was only 26 when he died of tuberculosis, but he managed to leave behind music that still pierces the heart centuries later.
His Stabat Mater, based on a 13th-century Catholic prayer, tells of Mary standing by the cross, watching her son suffer. The duet between soprano and alto is emotionally raw, filled with tension, dissonance, and sorrow. This isn’t music written for comfort. It’s written for truth.
