Felix Mendelssohn β Octet in E-flat Major, Op. 20
I. Allegro moderato ma con fuoco
π
Some people give books. Others, wine or scarves. Mendelssohn, at 16, gave his friend a birthday present like no other β a full-blown, symphonic-grade Octet.
He wrote it for Eduard Rietz, his close friend and violin teacher. Writing for eight string players is no small task β but Mendelssohn turned it into magic. The voices blend like a miniature symphony, yet each instrument keeps its own spirit.
Later, Mendelssohn said he loved this piece. And you can feel it: the joy, the vitality, the grace. This isnβt just a gift β itβs a celebration of friendship, youth, and pure musical fire.
