On this day in history December 11, 1946, the United Nations created the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF). Europe was in ruins after WWII, and millions of children faced starvation. The International Children's Emergency Fund was established as a short term measure to provide milk, shoes, and medicine to keep a generation alive. It was only meant to last a few years. It was originally built to provide emergency food and healthcare to children in countries devastated by World War II. It has since evolved into a permanent organization that has saved millions of lives through vaccination programs, education, and famine relief. It is one of the few global institutions purely dedicated to the welfare of children.
