☕ On This Day in History: The Boston Tea Party (1773) On December 16, 1773, American colonists known as the Sons of Liberty dumped 342 chests of tea into the Boston Harbor to protest British "taxation without representation." This event led directly to the independence of the United States, it was the spark that ignited a revolution. The British government responded harshly with the "Intolerable Acts," closing the port of Boston and stripping Massachusetts of self-government. This united the colonies in their resistance, leading directly to the First Continental Congress and, eventually, the American Revolutionary War.
