Today in History: A Promise to Humanity
On December 10, 1948, the world made a historic promise. Following the horrors of World War II, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
Championed by figures like Eleanor Roosevelt, this document was revolutionary. For the first time, nations agreed that fundamental rights like freedom of speech, freedom from torture, and the right to life belonged to everyone, everywhere, regardless of who they were or where they lived.
It remains the most translated document in the world and the foundation for international freedom and justice.
"Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home..." — Eleanor Roosevelt
