A landmark date in the history of Venetian masks is 1436, when mask manufacturers (mascareri) founded their own guild. Since then, art has developed and reached a high level by the modern era[1].
Masks were also used in everyday life to hide the face. This served a wide variety of purposes: from romantic dates to committing crimes. The latter led to a ban on wearing masks outside the carnival shortly before the end of the Republic of Venice.
