Oh hell yes, couldn't agree more.
The family IBM Aptiva was in a shared space. We called it the den, but it was basically a small office. This was the 1990's and a computer was a luxury item in my household. It just made sense that there was only one, that we all had to take care of it, and respect each others time. We learned together.
My brother and I were always the primary users, despite the utility my parents got out of it. The amount of free/shareware applications and games this came with out of the box felt mind blowing at the time. We were incredibly excited. Those computers sparked my joy for computing, for better or for worse. ^_^
Definitely gotta get more creative today. Even with devices in a shared space, your kids are eventually gonna be alone with them. My parents initially took the 15 foot RJ-11 cable with them to work everyday. Over one summer we managed to scrounge together an adapter, and had two shorter cables stretched across the rooms like a tightrope to get online while they were away.
Probably no different from any other matter, better be prepared for some frank conversations. Ours came shortly after they discovered our little cable trick. At first they were just pissed, but from there it became a discussion about shared expectations and trust. That trust was surely broken from time to time, but it was a better way forward than distrust and secret workarounds.
That said.. whew, the internet is 100x what it was then, and so is all the adjacent tech. Good luck! π«‘
