Because most people are told the wrong information by (their parents, their sprinkler installer, their news source, their neighbors, etc.). Or it could be the sprinkler installer set it up to water every day, because he can. I’ve been on several lawn care forums since 2002 where people share their ideas for proper watering. What turns out to work best for lawns from Phoenix to Vermont is the idea of deep and infrequent which mimics Mother Nature. Deep means 1 inch all at one time and not spread out over 7 days or even 2 days. Deep means deep. You can measure 1 inch by placing tuna or cat food cans around the yard. Time how long it takes your sprinklers to fill all the cans. That is your watering time from now on. Mine is 8 hours for an oscillator sprinkler on full sweep with my water pressure and hose. Some in-ground systems can deliver an inch in 20 minutes. You have to time your own setup.
