Music does not need narrative. Some of the most powerful musical experiences exist purely in sound, texture, emotion, and atmosphere — without story, characters, or linear progression. Ambient, drone, minimalism, free jazz, certain electronic genres, and much traditional non-Western music thrive precisely because they bypass narrative expectations.Narrative can deepen music (concept albums, opera, program music, song cycles), but it is not a requirement. Forcing story onto music that doesn’t need it often weakens its most essential power: direct, non-verbal emotional and sensory impact.Music’s freedom lies partly in its ability to mean everything and nothing at the same time.Related reading: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2019/jul/11/does-music-need-a-story https://pitchfork.com/features/article/why-ambient-music-doesnt-need-a-narrative/
