Pileus Cloud cap clouds are so unique Created when strong updrafts force moist air upward, it acts as a "cap" over top of the crunchy cumulus clouds and indicates, often within minutes, that severe weather or thunderstorms may be developing. They are different than the frayed and feathered looking clouds across the top of storms that are dissipating.
